Wedding rings on a marriage invitation, ready for certificate attestation

Which marriage certificate does DIRCO accept for attestation?

Unabridged (full) marriage certificate issued by the Department of Home Affairs, showing both spouses' details.
The original document, with the Home Affairs stamp and signature.
Names that match your passport or ID exactly, including maiden and married names where relevant.
Within the age limits set by DIRCO and by the destination country, which can be shorter.
Not the certificate handed to you by the marriage officer on the day. DIRCO does not accept it.
Not a computer printout, a certified copy or a laminated document. None of these are accepted.

Do not have an unabridged certificate? Contact us and we will assist with obtaining one.

Apostille or embassy attestation for your marriage certificate?

The destination country decides the route, not you and not us. These are the destinations we handle most often for marriage certificates.

Apostille route

Hague Convention destinations

One DIRCO apostille and the certificate is final. Schengen destinations often also require a sworn translation, and some Saudi employers still request embassy attestation, so confirm with your sponsor.

Authentication and embassy route

DIRCO authentication, then embassy attestation in Pretoria, then Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) attestation after arrival. Typically for a spouse joining on a family residence visa.

Country not listed? The same two routes apply everywhere. For the detail, see apostille versus attestation or our country pages for the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Marriage register and rings at a civil marriage registration

Why do you need a marriage certificate attested?

Spouse and partner visas

The UK, Australia, Canada and Schengen states all want proof of the marriage, legalised in South Africa, before a spouse visa is granted.

Family residence in the Gulf

Sponsoring a spouse for a residence visa in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia or Kuwait requires an attested marriage certificate. Often it is the one document that holds up the whole family's move.

Name changes and records abroad

Banks, passport offices and registries abroad want a legalised marriage certificate before they will change a surname or register the marriage locally.

Property, pensions and estates

Joint property purchases, spousal pension claims and estate matters in another country usually need the marriage proven with a legalised certificate.

What delays marriage certificate attestation

DIRCO and the embassies control their own processing times. These three things are what actually cause delays, and all of them are preventable before anything is lodged.

01

The wrong certificate

Arriving at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) with the marriage officer's certificate or a certified copy. It is turned away on the spot, and the Home Affairs wait for the unabridged version starts then.

02

Names that do not line up

A maiden name on the certificate and a married name on the passport, or a spelling difference between the two. Embassies decline applications over this, often without explaining why.

03

The wrong route, or a missing translation

Apostilling a certificate bound for the UAE, or attesting one bound for the UK, wastes weeks. Some destinations also require a sworn translation, which has its own sequence.

How long does marriage certificate attestation take?

It depends on the route and on whether you already hold the right certificate. Embassy attestation for non-Hague countries adds the embassy's own processing time, and any Ministry of Foreign Affairs step happens after arrival. Tell us your destination and deadline, and MGA Experiences manages each stage so nothing waits in the wrong queue.

We map the whole sequence at the first conversation and tell you honestly whether your deadline is realistic. For the wider picture, see our guide to document attestation in South Africa and whether you need embassy attestation.

Straight answers

Marriage certificate attestation: common questions

Can I attest a certified copy of my marriage certificate?

No. DIRCO only legalises original Home Affairs documents. Certified copies, computer printouts and laminated certificates are not accepted.

Is the certificate the marriage officer gave us enough for attestation?

No. For use abroad you need the unabridged (full) marriage certificate issued by the Department of Home Affairs.

Do I need an apostille or embassy attestation for my marriage certificate?

It depends on the destination. Hague Apostille Convention countries, including the UK, EU states, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Oman, accept an apostille. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait require DIRCO authentication followed by embassy and Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation.

Does my marriage certificate need a sworn translation?

Sometimes. Several Gulf and European destinations require a sworn translation, and the order in which translation and legalisation happen matters. We confirm this for your country before anything is lodged.

How long is an attested marriage certificate valid for?

There is no expiry on the apostille or attestation itself. The receiving authority sets its own limits, and DIRCO will not legalise documents beyond its age limit, so confirm the window with whoever is asking for it.

Can you attest my marriage certificate if I live overseas?

Yes. The South African side of the process happens in Pretoria regardless of where you live. We arrange collection, legalisation and courier delivery to you abroad.

Start your marriage certificate attestation

Tell us the country the certificate is for and when you need it, and let MGA Experiences handle every step from the unabridged certificate to final delivery. We will confirm the route and come back with a quote and a realistic timeline.
