[REVIEW] How Long Does Police Clearance Take

Police clearance timelines

How Long Does Police Clearance Take?

5–7 Working days, typical turnaround through MGA Experiences
6–8 weeks if you apply on your own at a police station

Applications managed through MGA Experiences' submission channel are typically issued in five to seven working days.

Apply on your own at a police station and the stated South African Police Service (SAPS) turnaround is six to eight weeks from the date a complete application is received, longer in busy periods, with no official expedited service to the public.

The biggest avoidable delay is submitting an incorrect application and only discovering the problem weeks later. Under deadline pressure? Tell MGA Experiences your date and we will manage the application against it.

Get a realistic timeline

When the SAPS six to eight week processing time actually starts

The official window starts when SAPS receives a complete police clearance certificate application. It does not include:

Preparing the police clearance application

Gathering documents and having fingerprints taken correctly happens before the clock starts.

Courier time to and from Pretoria

The application has to reach Pretoria, and the certificate has to come back. Applying from outside South Africa adds to both legs.

Apostille or attestation after issue

If your destination country needs an apostille or embassy attestation, that is a separate step with its own timeline, after the certificate is issued.

Plan against the total, not against the six to eight week figure alone.

Why a police clearance can take four months instead of two

Fingerprints that do not meet SAPS standards

The most common reason a file is returned. Print quality is judged against SAPS requirements, and a returned set is only discovered after it has already spent weeks in processing. We review your fingerprints against SAPS requirements before submission.

ID details that do not match

Names, ID numbers and supporting documents must agree exactly. Maiden names, initials and small spelling differences are enough to stall an application. We cross-check every document against your identification before lodgement.

Applying during peak SAPS periods

Volumes are not constant through the year. Submitting into a peak adds weeks that have nothing to do with your paperwork. We advise on timing when you enquire.

Finding out too late that an apostille is needed

Finding out after issue that you also need an apostille adds weeks that should have been planned in from the start. We confirm the legalisation requirement up front so the steps run together.

Working backwards from your deadline: tell us the date the certificate is needed and MGA Experiences plans the sequence backwards from it, including the legalisation and courier steps.

Once you have it, how long is a police clearance certificate valid for

There is no expiry date printed on a South African police clearance certificate.

In practice, most embassies, employers and institutions want one issued within the last six months. Some accept twelve. The requirement belongs to whoever is asking for it, not to SAPS, so confirm the window with them before you apply.

This matters for timing. A certificate obtained too early can fall outside the receiving authority's acceptance window before your main application is decided. More in our guide to police clearance validity.

Straight answers

Police clearance processing time: common questions

Can I pay to get a police clearance certificate faster?

Not with SAPS itself; there is no official expedited service. What changes the turnaround is the submission channel and the preparation: applications managed by MGA Experiences are typically issued in five to seven working days.

Is a police clearance quicker if I apply in person?

Attending in person is part of the process, but it does not change how long SAPS takes once the application is lodged.

How do I check the status of my police clearance application?

SAPS gives applicants very limited visibility once an application is lodged; there is no reliable public tracking. MGA Experiences follows up on clients' behalf and reports at each stage, so you are not phoning the Criminal Record Centre yourself.

Does a South African police clearance take longer from overseas?

Yes, because courier time is added at both ends. See police clearance from abroad.

What if I need my police clearance certificate urgently?

Tell us the deadline at the first conversation. Managed applications typically take five to seven working days, and we will tell you plainly whether your date can be met.

Get a realistic police clearance timeline for your situation

Tell us what the certificate is for and when you need it. We will tell you honestly whether it is achievable, and if it is, MGA Experiences handles the application from first form to final delivery.

No obligation. We will tell you if you do not need us.
