Three generations of hands, for a birth certificate attestation for family use abroad

What birth certificate attestation involves

Birth certificate attestation is the legalisation of a South African birth certificate so that a foreign government, school or employer will accept it. For Hague Apostille Convention countries that means an apostille from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). For countries outside the Convention, including the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, it means DIRCO authentication followed by embassy attestation in Pretoria and Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation on arrival. See our guide to document attestation in South Africa for the full picture.

When do you need a birth certificate attested?

Family together at home before a dependant visa application

Dependant and family visas

Sponsoring a child for a residence visa in the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia or Kuwait, or including children on a UK, Australian or Schengen family application, requires each child's birth certificate legalised in South Africa.

Three generations of one family, for citizenship by descent

Citizenship by descent

Applications for British, Irish, Portuguese, Dutch, German and other citizenship through a parent or grandparent need attested birth certificates for every generation in the chain, often several at once.

Children carrying backpacks on the way to class abroad

School and university enrolment abroad

Schools in the Gulf and universities in Europe and North America ask for an attested birth certificate at enrolment, and some ask for a sworn translation with it.

Passport with immigration stamps, for passports and inheritance abroad

Passports, inheritance and adoption

Foreign passport applications for children, estate and inheritance matters, and intercountry adoption all rely on a birth certificate that has been legalised for the country concerned.

Which birth certificate does DIRCO accept?

This is where most birth certificate attestations fail. The certificate issued at birth is usually the abridged version, and DIRCO will not legalise it.

Accepted

Unabridged (full) birth certificate issued by the Department of Home Affairs, showing both parents' details
The original, with the Home Affairs stamp and signature
Child's name and parents' names matching the passports exactly
Within the age limits set by DIRCO and by the destination country

Not accepted

The abridged certificate issued at registration, which does not show both parents' details
Certified copies, however recently certified
Computer printouts without a stamp and signature
Laminated certificates, which cannot be stamped

Only have the abridged certificate? Contact us and we will assist with obtaining the unabridged version. Attesting a marriage certificate at the same time? The same rules apply to it.

How birth certificate attestation works with MGA

The sequence is fixed by the destination country. What we add is getting each step right the first time, and running the steps in the right order so nothing has to be repeated.

Step 1

The right certificate

We check the certificate you have, and where it is abridged or a copy, we apply for the unabridged version from Home Affairs on your behalf.

Step 2

DIRCO legalisation

Apostille for Hague destinations, or a Certificate of Authentication for the rest, issued by the DIRCO Legalisation Section in Pretoria.

Step 3

Embassy attestation

For the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and other non-Hague countries, attestation at the destination country's embassy or consulate in Pretoria.

Step 4

Translation and delivery

A sworn translation where the destination requires one, then tracked delivery to you in South Africa or abroad, ready for Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation if applicable.

How long does birth certificate attestation take?

It depends on the route and on how many certificates are involved. Embassy attestation for non-Hague countries adds the embassy's own processing time, and any Ministry of Foreign Affairs step happens after arrival in the destination country. MGA Experiences runs the steps in parallel and manages each queue for you.

Missing the unabridged certificate? We assist with the Home Affairs application as part of the same job, so it does not hold up the rest.

For several children, or for a birth certificate and marriage certificate together, the steps run in parallel rather than one after the other. Not sure whether you need an apostille or embassy attestation? See do I need embassy attestation.

Start early

The earlier we start, the more options you have against your deadline.

Tell us the destination, the deadline and how many certificates are involved. It changes what we recommend.

Straight answers

Birth certificate attestation: common questions

Can I attest the birth certificate issued at the hospital or at birth registration?

Usually not. The certificate issued at registration is normally the abridged version, which does not show both parents' details. DIRCO requires the unabridged (full) birth certificate from the Department of Home Affairs, which shows both parents' details.

Does my child's birth certificate need an apostille or embassy attestation?

It depends on the destination. Hague Apostille Convention countries, including the UK, EU states, Australia, the USA, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Oman, accept a DIRCO apostille. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait require DIRCO authentication followed by embassy attestation and Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation in-country.

Can I attest a certified copy of a birth certificate?

No. DIRCO only legalises original Home Affairs documents. Certified copies, computer printouts and laminated certificates are not accepted.

Does a birth certificate need a sworn translation for attestation?

Sometimes. Several Gulf and European destinations require a sworn translation, and whether it is done before or after legalisation depends on the country. We confirm this before anything is lodged.

Can you attest a birth certificate if I live overseas?

Yes. The South African side of the process happens in Pretoria regardless of where you live. We arrange the Home Affairs certificate if needed, the legalisation and courier delivery to you abroad.

How long is an attested birth certificate valid for?

The apostille or attestation itself does not expire. The receiving authority sets its own age limits, and DIRCO applies a limit of its own, so confirm the window with whoever is asking for the document.

Start your birth certificate attestation

Tell us the country the certificate is for, how many certificates are involved and when you need them, and let MGA Experiences handle every step from Home Affairs to final delivery. We will confirm the route and come back with a quote and a realistic timeline.

No obligation. We will tell you if you do not need us.
