Why Atlantic Seaboard residents need a police clearance certificate

Emigration and work visas abroad

The UK, Australia, Europe and the Gulf all require a South African police clearance certificate for residency and work visas. Most embassies want one issued within the last six months, which makes timing matter.

Foreign nationals living on the Seaboard

Temporary and permanent residence applications in South Africa routinely require a SAPS police clearance certificate. If you have lived here more than a year, you will usually be asked for one.

Employment and professional registration

Employers, professional bodies and licensing authorities abroad ask for a police clearance certificate before confirming a role, and often ask again at renewal.

What delays a police clearance application from Cape Town

SAPS controls the processing time; these three preventable problems are what actually cause delays.

01

Fingerprints that do not meet SAPS standards

One of the most common reasons an application is delayed or returned, and the problem is often only discovered weeks later. We review your fingerprints against SAPS requirements before submission to reduce the risk of rejection.

02

Details that do not match

Your names, ID number and supporting documents must match exactly. A maiden name, a missing initial or an outdated document is enough to delay an application. We cross-check every document against your identification before your application is lodged.

03

Choosing the wrong legalisation route

Apostille or embassy attestation depends entirely on the destination country, and using the wrong process costs weeks and a second round of couriers. We confirm your destination's requirements before the application starts.

How MGA Experiences handles your police clearance

One consultant manages the application from start to finish, wherever you are between Green Point and Hout Bay.

Prepared and reviewed before submission

We complete the SAPS forms with you, assemble the supporting documents and review everything against current requirements, so nothing is missing when it reaches SAPS.

Monitored, with updates at each stage

We monitor the application through the process and report at each stage, so you are not chasing SAPS yourself.

Apostille planned in from day one

If the certificate is going abroad, we plan the apostille or embassy legalisation into the same job, in the right order, and deliver the finished document.

How long does a police clearance certificate take on the Atlantic Seaboard?

Apply on your own and the stated SAPS turnaround is six to eight weeks. Through MGA Experiences' managed submission channel, certificates are typically issued in five to seven working days.

Where you live in Cape Town changes nothing; the channel and the preparation change everything. An application that is correct at first submission, and an apostille planned in from the start, is what we control.

If you have a visa appointment or a start date, see how long a police clearance takes and plan backwards from it.

Start early

The earlier we start against your deadline, the more options you have, especially if an apostille or embassy attestation is also required.

Tell us your deadline at the first conversation. It changes what we recommend.

Working through a checklist while planning a move abroad

Do you need an apostille with your police clearance certificate?

It depends on the country the certificate is for, and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) will not legalise a police clearance certificate older than six months, so the two steps have to be timed together.

Part of the police clearance process requires you in person. We will tell you exactly what is needed and when, so you make one trip rather than several.

Do you serve Camps Bay, Clifton and Bantry Bay as well as Sea Point?

Yes. We assist applicants across the whole Atlantic Seaboard, Green Point to Hout Bay.

Yes. South Africans abroad can apply from where they live, and MGA Experiences manages overseas applications as standard. See our police clearance from abroad page.
