How to attest South African documents for use in the UAE
UAE document attestation
The short answer
If you are moving to the UAE for work, residency, study, marriage or business, the receiving authority may require your South African documents to be attested first. Attestation confirms that the signatures and official seals on a document are genuine. For South African documents, it is a multi-stage process involving South African authorities, the UAE Embassy in South Africa and, in some cases, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). With the UAE Golden Visa in growing demand, more South African families are also being asked for attested personal documents, so getting the process right from the start matters.
MGA Experiences confirms what your application requires, checks your documents before anything is submitted, coordinates each attestation stage in the right order, and arranges translation and courier where needed.

Why South Africans need UAE attestation
| Employment and employment visas | Employers or authorities ask for authenticated qualifications or a police clearance. |
| Golden Visa applications | The main applicant and their family members may need attested documents such as marriage and birth certificates. |
| Residency and family applications | Birth, marriage or death certificates may be required. |
| Study, registration and licensing | Universities and professional bodies may ask for attested qualifications or records. |
| Business needs | Company documents and powers of attorney. |
The receiving UAE authority decides which documents it wants and how they must be attested, so confirm this first.
Attestation for the UAE Golden Visa
Golden Visa applications are increasingly common among South Africans relocating to the UAE, and families often need attested documents to include a spouse and children on the visa. Typical examples are marriage certificates, birth certificates and, depending on the applicant’s category, qualifications or a police clearance.
Each family member’s documents must be consistent. Names, dates and ID details should match across every certificate, and any name change needs supporting proof. Because a family file involves several documents with different age limits and routes, it is worth sequencing everything before you submit anything.
Confirm first
The authority handling your Golden Visa application decides exactly which documents it needs and how they must be attested.
Documents we can help attest
| Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) | Issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS), commonly requested for UAE employment and residency. |
| Educational documents | Degrees, diplomas and academic transcripts. |
| Personal documents | Birth, marriage and death certificates. |
| Legal documents | Powers of attorney and other eligible instruments. |
| Corporate documents | Company registration documents and commercial agreements. |
Educational, personal, police and commercial documents can follow different routes. Commercial invoices and certificates of origin, for example, go through a separate UAE MoFA commercial attestation service.
What we need from you
Clear copies of the documents to be attested, your South African ID or passport, details of the UAE authority that will receive them and what they are for, and proof of any name change if your name differs between documents. For a police clearance we also need a full, clear set of fingerprints on the applicable SAPS form (such as SAPS 91(a)) and your last South African address.
Documents required may vary. Please check with us in advance to confirm your requirements before you start.
How the process works
Confirm what the receiving authority wants
Ask which documents are needed, whether originals or certified copies are accepted, how recent a police clearance must be and whether a translation is required.
Prepare the originals
Check that names and ID details match across documents. The UAE Embassy requires official personal documents, including birth, marriage and death certificates, in original form. Do not laminate originals.
Obtain the South African verification
A police clearance is issued by SAPS in Pretoria and the original cannot be emailed. Educational certificates are certified by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) first, according to the Embassy’s published guidance.
DIRCO authentication
South African documents must be authenticated by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) before UAE Embassy attestation. DIRCO will not legalise a police clearance older than six months from its date of issue.
UAE Embassy and MoFA attestation
Eligible documents can be submitted to the UAE Embassy in South Africa, with proof of payment. The Embassy describes a digital service covering both Embassy and MoFA attestation in one application. Originals are collected through an approved provider, attested digitally and returned by courier.
Translation if required
Confirm the acceptable language, whether the translator must be certified and whether translation comes before or after attestation. The wrong order can mean paying twice.
Review and keep records
Check the finished documents, verify them through the MoFA online service and keep copies of payment confirmations and courier tracking.
How long does it take?
There is no single timeframe. It depends on the document type, SAQA or SAPS processing, DIRCO, Embassy and MoFA stages, plus translation and courier. SAPS publishes an estimate of about 15 working days for a complete police clearance application, which excludes courier, DIRCO, attestation and translation, so treat it as a best case. Confirm current estimates before you plan around a deadline.
Why UAE attestation gets delayed or rejected
Missing documents or proof of payment
An incomplete file is returned or held until the gap is closed.
Names that do not match
Names differing across documents, or missing proof of a name change.
Steps in the wrong order
For example, submitting before DIRCO authentication.
Unclear fingerprints
Poor prints on a police clearance application.
A police clearance that ages out
It can expire before it is authenticated or submitted.
Translation at the wrong stage
Translation done before or after the wrong stage.
Courier delays and changing procedures
Delays in transit, and fees or procedures that change.
What MGA Experiences does for you
We confirm the requirements for your visa, job or application, check your documents before anything is sent, manage the South African stages including SAPS, SAQA and DIRCO, coordinate UAE Embassy and MoFA attestation, and arrange translation and courier where needed. If something could cause a rejection or push a document past its age limit, we tell you before it goes in, not weeks later.
Planning rule
Work backwards from the date you must submit. Allow for preparation, South African verification, DIRCO, UAE attestation, translation and courier both ways, and make sure each document is still within its age limit on submission day.
UAE document attestation: common questions
Does a South African police clearance need attestation for the UAE?
Often yes, if the UAE authority asks for it. It is typically authenticated by DIRCO, then attested by the UAE Embassy. Confirm the requirement with your employer or authority.
Do I need attested documents for a UAE Golden Visa?
Often yes, particularly where family members are included. Marriage and birth certificates are commonly requested, and these typically go through DIRCO authentication and then UAE Embassy attestation. Confirm the exact requirements with the authority handling your application, and we can check your documents before they go in.
Does DIRCO come before the UAE Embassy?
Yes. The Embassy’s published guidance requires DIRCO authentication of South African documents before Embassy attestation.
How do I attest a degree for the UAE?
The Embassy’s guidance identifies SAQA certification, then DIRCO authentication, then UAE Embassy attestation, with MoFA attestation where required.
Can it be done online?
Partly. A digital Embassy and MoFA service exists for eligible documents, but the original physical document must still be collected and handled.
Do I need an Arabic translation?
Not necessarily. It depends on the receiving authority.
How much does it cost?
The total depends on the document type, official fees, courier and translation. Tell us your situation and we will quote.
